His Words / His Smile / His Tears

His Words

The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) rarely spoke and often remained silent. He did not engage in bad or idle talk. When he spoke, he did so deliberately and carefully. He did not speak unless necessary, and all his words were for goodness. When starting a conversation, he would make a gesture with his hand. Those present in his gatherings would lower their heads and listen with great respect. When needed, he would repeat a statement three times.

He cared about the worldly and hereafter affairs of his companions. He liked words that brought good news and made things easier, and disliked words that drove people away and made things difficult.

His heart and tongue were constantly engaged in the remembrance of Allah. He never interrupted anyone's speech and did not cause harm with words or actions. He endured the difficulties arising from the questions and words of those coming from distant lands. He did not prevent permissible games. Sometimes, he would make jokes.

His Smile

The Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) was cheerful and often smiled. He was constantly smiling unless he was receiving revelation, giving a sermon, or thinking about the Day of Judgment. Rarely did he laugh so hard that his molars were visible.

His Tears

The crying of the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) was as moderate as his smiling. He feared Allah greatly due to his humility and awe. Because of his love and longing for Allah, a groaning sound from his heart could be heard. He said,  “If you knew what I know, you would laugh little and cry much,”  (al-Bukhari, Khusuf 2)   reminding us that fear of Allah is necessary for everyone. He used to cry sincerely while worshipping. Sometimes, his heart's trembling could be heard during prayer.

It was his habit to ponder the verses while reciting the Quran. He loved to listen to the Quran recited by others, and tears would flow from his eyes while listening. He cried over the dead but did not wail, only shedding tears. He forbade wailing for the deceased.

Throughout his life, the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) never yawned. When he sneezed, he covered his face with his hand and muffled the sound by placing his finger over his brow. After sneezing, he would say, “Alhamdulillah” and added,  “Allah loves (people’s) sneezing but dislikes (their) yawning.” (al-Bukhari, Adab, 165)
