The First Revelation

The First Revelation

The Prophet [ sallallahu alayhi wa sallam ], who is the reason for the existence of all worlds, lived a pure youth and an honorable family life. After that, at the age of forty, he was granted prophethood. Six months before the age of forty, divine power opened the Cave of Hira in Mecca as a sacred school for him.   It was the 17th day of the blessed month of Ramadan, according to another narration, the 27th day. As usual, the Prophet [peace be upon him] was in the Cave of Hira. Angel Jibreel came and said to the Prophet [ sallallahu alayhi wa sallam ], 'Read!'

The Prophet [ sallallahu alayhi wa sallam] replied, 'I do not know how to read.' Upon this, the angel squeezed the Prophet [ sallallahu alayhi wa sallam ] until he could no longer bear it. Then the angel said again, 'Read!' The Prophet [ sallallahu alayhi wa sallam ] again replied, 'I do not know how to read.' Angel Jibreel squeezed him again until he could no longer bear it. Then he said again, 'Read!' The Prophet [ sallallahu alayhi wa sallam ] again replied, 'I do not know how to read.

Angel Jibreel squeezed the Prophet [ sallallahu alayhi wa sallam ]   for the third time and then released him.  Then he delivered the divine revelation to him as follows:

“Read in the name of your Lord who created. He created man from a clot of blood. Read, for your Lord is the Most Generous, Who taught by the Pen, Taught man what he did not know.” (Al-Alaq 1–5)

With this divine command, the revelation of the Qur’an, the greatest blessing of the Lord, began for all humanity through the Messenger of Allah.
